Carolyn Marie Waterson was born to Patricia and William Waterson. An "Air Force brat," Carolyn got to grow up in many different places, including North Carolina, New York, Texas, Nebraska and Taiwan. Her best friends (and the ones that followed her on all her moves) were her siblings, Beth and Bill, and her books. Early favorites were the Chronicles of Narnia by C. S. Lewis, the Robert Heinlein juveniles, and the stories of the Grey Lensman and the Galactic Patrol by E.E. "Doc" Smith.

Having had many to choose from, Carolyn claims Chapel Hill, North Carolina as her home town. She graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a BA in Education in December of 1982, then worked there for the following ten years.

In the fall of 1994, Carolyn moved to New Jersey to attend the Kubert School with the goal of becoming a commercial artist. In her class there was a young man named Loston Wallace with whom she was very impressed. It turned out the feeling was mutual; the two were married a year and a half later.

Carolyn has an abiding love for science fiction and fantasy, but she also enjoys books with anthropological, psychological, and/or metaphysical leanings, such as The Alphabet Versus the Goddess, Emotional Intelligence, and The New Inquisition. Her favorite song is Louis Armstrong's rendition of "It's A Wonderful World," and her favorite movies include WHAT DREAMS MAY COME, EVIL DEAD II, YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, HELLO, DOLLY! (the Barbra Streisand version) and THE PRINCESS BRIDE.
